This sugarcane bagasse pellet production line was built in Kenya on a site of approximately 6,500 square meters. The project was designed with a focus on practical operation, controlled investment, and simple maintenance, making it suitable for biomass pellet production in markets where production costs need to be carefully controlled.
The raw material is sugarcane bagasse, a by-product from sugar mills. The bagasse is approximately 8 cm in size with an initial moisture content of around 45–50%. Due to its relatively high moisture content, the material first needs to be dried before entering the pelletizing process.
The production line is equipped with a 3.5 × 24 m rotary drum dryer, a pellet burner, two 200 kW hammer mills, three XGJ850 pellet mills, one pellet cooler, and two big-bag weighing and packing machines.
The overall layout is intentionally simple. The main processing sections are not connected by extensive conveying equipment, and no hydraulic storage bins are used. This helps reduce equipment investment and simplifies maintenance while meeting the basic requirements of continuous biomass pellet production.

The raw sugarcane bagasse contains approximately 45–50% moisture, which is too high for direct pelletizing. Therefore, drying is an essential part of the production process.
The line uses a 3.5 × 24 m rotary drum dryer to reduce the moisture content of the bagasse to below 20% before the material enters the subsequent processing stage.
A pellet burner supplies the heat required by the drying system. The rotary drum dryer provides continuous drying of the bagasse, helping prepare the material for the hammer mills and pellet mills.
For high-moisture sugarcane bagasse, effective moisture reduction is particularly important. By bringing the material to a suitable moisture range before pelletizing, the dryer provides better conditions for subsequent size reduction and pellet formation.
Two 200 kW hammer mills are configured in the production line for further size reduction of the dried bagasse.
After drying, the moisture content of the material is reduced to below 20%, creating more suitable conditions for further processing. The hammer mills then reduce the bagasse to approximately 10–20 mm, providing a more uniform particle size for the pelletizing section.
The hammer mill is an important preparation step because the particle size of the raw material directly affects material feeding and pellet formation. By processing the dried bagasse into a more suitable size, the hammer mills help provide a more consistent feed for the pellet mills.
For this Kenya project, the use of two 200 kW hammer mills provides the required crushing capacity while keeping the equipment configuration practical and straightforward.
After drying and crushing, the prepared bagasse is fed into three XGJ850 pellet mills for pelletizing.
Each XGJ850 pellet mill has a typical capacity of approximately 3–4 tons per hour, depending on factors such as raw material characteristics, moisture content, particle size, and operating conditions.
With three pellet mills, the production line can reach an overall capacity of approximately 9–12 tons per hour, providing a suitable solution for continuous sugarcane bagasse pellet production.
The pellet mills compress the prepared biomass material through the die to form dense biomass fuel pellets. Compared with the original loose bagasse, the finished pellets are easier to handle, transport, and store.
After pelletizing, the newly formed biomass pellets enter the pellet cooler for controlled cooling. The cooler reduces pellet temperature and helps prepare the finished pellets for subsequent packing and storage. Its continuous cooling operation supports stable handling of the finished pellets.
After cooling, the finished pellets are transferred to two Jumbo Bag Packaging Machines. The system combines weighing and bulk bagging, allowing the pellets to be measured and packed efficiently. This provides a practical solution for large-volume pellet handling and transportation.
One of the main features of this Kenya project is its simple production line layout.
Compared with a more automated biomass pellet plant, this line does not use extensive conveying equipment between the main processing sections and does not include hydraulic storage bins. This reduces the number of auxiliary systems required and helps lower the overall investment.
The simpler configuration also makes equipment maintenance and daily operation more straightforward.
This type of production line is particularly suitable for projects that prioritize practical production, controlled investment, and simple maintenance while still requiring continuous pellet production.
